In enterprise environments, capturing data from physical sensors is only half the battle. The real challenge lies in securely transporting that data through highly protected, tier-one corporate networks without triggering security alarms or violating IT policies.
The Gap Between IoT and Enterprise IT
Many standard IoT solutions rely on direct cloud connections (like AWS IoT or Azure IoT Hub). However, in environments running enterprise-grade Cisco infrastructure, devices are heavily segmented, firewalled, and monitored. You cannot simply connect a rogue ESP32 to a corporate Wi-Fi network and expect it to transmit data safely.
Bridging the Divide
At Noisy Atom, our approach heavily leverages Cisco’s edge computing capabilities:
- Local Gateways: Instead of every sensor talking to the cloud, our sensors communicate locally via LoRaWAN or BLE to a central, hardened gateway.
- Cisco Edge Routers: Our gateways interface directly with Cisco Edge routers (like the IR1101), utilizing Cisco IOx to run custom data-processing containers directly on the router hardware.
- Secure Tunnels: Data is aggregated, encrypted, and sent through existing, IT-approved IPSec VPN tunnels rather than opening new external firewall ports.
By respecting the enterprise network topology and building our hardware to natively understand Cisco networking protocols, we deliver IoT solutions that Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) actually approve of.
